TYLER, Texas, Aug. 31, 2018 – Brookshire Grocery Co. (BGC) will celebrate 90 years of serving customers and communities on Sept. 1.
BGC was founded by Wood T. (W.T.) Brookshire, who opened the company’s first store on Sept. 1, 1928, in downtown Tyler, Texas. W.T. believed it was his calling to serve people through the grocery business and built BGC on a strong foundation of core values that continue to guide the company today.
In 90 years, BGC has grown from one store to over 180 locations in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas under the Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, FRESH by Brookshire’s and Spring Market banners. Following the founder’s example, BGC remains deeply committed to serving customers and the 150 communities where it operates stores.
Each year, the company’s giving program assists hundreds of nonprofit organizations that support its primary causes of hunger relief, education, family health and wellbeing, and military heroes and first responders. Employees collectively volunteer 20,000 hours annually assisting communities and nonprofit organizations.
In the past 30 years, the Brookshire’s Benefit Golf Tournament has awarded more than $5.5 million to nonprofits that serve causes the company supports. BGC’s Heroes Flight program has escorted more than 400 World War II veterans on all-expenses paid trips to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials dedicated to their service. BGC also hosts two annual races – the FRESH 15 in Tyler and the Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods Heroes Run in Shreveport. These races have raised more than $600,000 for charities since 2014. The company’s annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive assists approximately 16,000 households each year, providing about 500,000 pounds of food to people in need.
